The birth of Oynk

My love affair with lard

My love affair with lard began in the summer of 2020.

Ironically,  I was in the midst of a fairly rigorous treatment protocol for my skin under the guidance of a naturopath and skin specialist. I was taking many supplements, following certain dietary guidelines and using a range of bespoke skin products which were formulated specifically for my skin repair.

This was not a new path for me. Since my early teens, my skin has been a source of distress. I have literally paid tens of thousands of dollars to obtain skin that I would feel more confident in.  Anyone that has had a “skin journey” will know that our skin is a sensitive and complex organ and many factors of our lifestyle and health influence its appearance. It is the first thing people notice about us and can be what makes or breaks our sense of self confidence. But I digress! Back to the summer of 2020 and the birth of the concept of Oynk!

My skin was red and irritated and I couldn’t bare the thought of putting any of my usual products on it. I knew that animal fats were being used for skincare but back then it certainly wasn’t as popular as it is now. I happened to have 2 jars in my fridge or regeneratively farmed pork lard and beef tallow. I reached for the tallow first since I knew it to be used in skincare already but applying it straight from the jar to my face it had a strong smell and it was very difficult to spread. I am fairly open to weird and wonderful skin products but this wasn’t doing it for me! I reached for the pork lard and hesitated for a moment, wondering if I could use it this way, I’d never heard about it being used on skin, only for baking but then I thought about my Dad who had open heart surgery in the year 2000 and he had 2 valves in his heart replaced with pig tissue valves so I figured there must be a synergy between the pig and human and I stuck my spoon in the jar of lard which was this gorgeous, smooth consistency and pure white in colour. I put some into my hands and it melted on the warmth of my skin, I placed my hands on my face and it felt immediately soothing.
